Garage Screen: Rewriting Reality

Reality, already reduced in the era of post-truth and social networks, suffered another setback with the onset of the pandemic — documentaries are looking for ways to describe a new world, in which the tangible is mixed with the virtual and history is happening before our eyes. A programme presented at the Garage Screen summer cinema run by the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, a major Russian art institution, brings together films that oppose the conventions of documentary filmmaking, openly or covertly rejecting the fixation on reality in favor of creating new narratives and meanings.

Music

Documentaries about music that is more than just music — about music as a weapon of protest and a fight for identity, music as an experiment and music as a ritual. Blues nights at the legendary Apollo club in Harlem, the Rock Against Racism movement in the UK, transgressive Throbbing Gristle performances — all of these have shaped our cultural landscape and continue to influence new generations of musicians. The programme is supported by Beat Film Festival’s long term partner Levi’s, a brand closely associated with music and rebellious spirit.
